Joywave landed on everyone's radar when vocalist Daniel Armbruster teamed up with producer Alan Wilkis for the Big Data single "Dangerous", which climbed to number two on the Billboard Rock and Alternative Airplay chart and sent the Rochester indie rock band straight to Lollapalooza and late night television. Their debut album How Do You Feel Now? followed in 2015, cracking the Billboard Alternative Albums chart at number 25 and featuring singles like "Tongues" and "Destruction", with the "Tongues" video directed by the filmmaking duo Daniels. They have kept a steady pace since, releasing five albums in total. Possession leaned heavily on samples from the Voyager Golden Record, giving it a genuinely strange and compelling texture, while Cleanse was written and recorded largely in isolation during the pandemic. Their fifth album, Permanent Pleasure, arrived in 2024. Along the way they have shared stages with Young the Giant, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and Brandon Flowers, building a loyal following well outside their upstate New York home base.
