About
Judith Sephuma has built one of the most distinctive voices in South African jazz over two decades, blending Afro pop, gospel and what she calls Afro Funk Jazz into a sound that feels both rooted and restless. Her debut album A Cry, A Smile, A Dance landed in 2001 to strong critical reception, and she has kept releasing ever since, covering everything from straight up jazz to live gospel recordings. By 2019 she was putting out Power of Dreams, her ninth album, which she described as a journey of self rediscovery channelled through Afro Jazz. Tracks like Ntshwarele sit alongside more introspective cuts, and the whole project carries that reflective quality she has leaned into on later records. She runs everything through her own independent label, Lalomba Music, keeping full control of a catalogue that now spans more than twenty years.
