Judith Weir spent a decade as Master of the King's Music, appointed in 2014 as the first woman ever to hold that role. Her music pulls from medieval history, Scottish folk traditions, and a Stravinsky influenced economy of means that makes simple ideas feel strangely vivid. While she has a strong body of orchestral and chamber work, opera is where she is most distinctive. Her first stage piece, The Black Spider, arrived in 1985, and was followed by a string of full length operas including A Night at the Chinese Opera, The Vanishing Bridegroom, and Blond Eckbert, commissioned by English National Opera. She also wrote woman.life.song for Jessye Norman and We are Shadows for Simon Rattle. More recently she composed a choral setting of Psalm 42 for the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, and Brighter Visions Shine Afar for the coronation of Charles III.
