Jupiter Bokondji leads Jupiter & Okwess with a sound he calls "Bofenia Rock", a brew of Afropop, traditional Congolese rhythms, funk, and rock that doesn't fit neatly into any single box. The Kinshasa band came together in 1990 but spent years navigating the chaos of the First Congo War before breaking through internationally. A 2006 documentary, Jupiter's Dance, brought Bokondji wider attention, eventually landing the group on the African Express tour and a slot at Glastonbury in 2013. Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz is among the names they have collaborated with, and the band's track with him, Musonsu, gave that connection a proper release. Their lyrics tend to carry weight, pushing back against the Congolese government or urging Africans to own their potential. Recent videos like Mieux que ça and Telejayi show the band very much still at it.
