About
Jurbena Jazz Band is an eight piece Dutch ensemble devoted to the "Frisco" style of traditional jazz that originated in San Francisco. Two cornet players sit at the heart of the group's sound, evoking the twin cornet approach associated with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band from 1923 and Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band from the 1940s. The band draws its very name from that Yerba Buena connection. Their repertoire pulls from composers and performers like Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Clarence Williams, Johnny Dodds, Joe "King" Oliver, Turk Murphy and Lu Watters himself, with The South Frisco Jazz Band out of Costa Mesa, California serving as a key inspiration. The musicians come from various other jazz outfits around the Netherlands, bringing real collective experience to the bandstand. Because of the specificity of the style combined with a genuine enthusiasm and a streak of humour, no two of their sets land quite the same way.
