Kalmah have been perfecting their brand of swampy melodic death metal since forming in Pudasjärvi, Finland in 1998, and the name itself sets the tone perfectly: "kalmah" is Karelian for "to the grave." Signed to Spinefarm Records almost immediately after forming, they dropped their debut Swamplord in 2000 and never really let up. Their sound draws comparisons to Children of Bodom and Wintersun, blending melodic death metal with power metal sensibilities and a distinctly northern Finnish atmosphere. Some of their songs pull directly from the swamp landscapes of Northern Ostrobothnia, and the band even calls their fans "swamp lords" with a knowing wink. Over the years they have built up a serious catalogue, from The Black Waltz and For the Revolution through to 12 Gauge in 2010 and the swamp themed Seventh Swamphony in 2013. Their eighth album Palo arrived in 2018, followed by a self titled ninth record in 2023 on new label Ranka Kustannus. Nine albums deep, they remain one of the more distinctive acts in Finnish metal.
