About
Also known as: カマシ・ワシントン
Kamasi Washington plays tenor saxophone like he's got something urgent to say, and the jazz world has been listening closely since his 2015 debut solo record The Epic, a sprawling triple album that landed like a statement of intent. Growing up in Los Angeles and coming up through the West Coast Get Down collective, he built a reputation as a serious collaborator long before he put his name on the marquee, lending his horn to Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and working alongside the likes of Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Run the Jewels, and St. Vincent. His own records pull from bebop, spiritual jazz, and fusion without sounding like a museum piece. Heaven and Earth followed in 2018, and his 2024 album Fearless Movement showed he had no interest in slowing down. More recently he composed part of the soundtrack for the 2025 anime series Lazarus alongside Bonobo and Floating Points, a project directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. Kendrick even gave him a shoutout in the 2024 track "Not Like Us", which tells you plenty about where Washington sits in the culture right now.
