About
Karam Al Zouhir plays viola and sings, and he builds his solo work around the warm, woody depth of that instrument. Originally from Damascus, he is now based between Marseille and Strasbourg, and his music is shaped by the experience of being uprooted. The viola is his way of picturing what it means to be somewhere else. His first solo EP, Mashka Daym (Viola Tales of Exile), mixes creative music with poetry by Konstantinos Kavafis from Greece, Salwa Zakzak from Syria and André Weckmann from Alsace. It reads as an ode to memory and belonging, where old travel stories echo against the present day. The idea running through it is that home is more than a country. It can be a smell, an accent or a melody you share with other people.
