About
Also known as: Katherin Stott, Kathryn Stoff
Kathryn Stott once found a stranger playing cello in her flat. It was Yo Yo Ma, who had sublet it from her flatmate Nigel Kennedy without realising the place was shared. They've worked together since 1985, and their records Soul of the Tango and Obrigado Brazil both won Grammys. In 2020 she curated their album Songs of Comfort and Hope, made as a response to the pandemic. The English pianist made her name with fifth place at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1978, and she's known for English and French repertoire, especially Fauré, whose complete piano works she recorded. She's also a keen champion of contemporary composers, with many works written for her, and she's explored tango since the mid 1990s. Beyond playing, she's a festival programmer who once let audiences try out Steinways, including a red "Ferrari" one. She also teaches at the Royal Northern College of Music.
