About
Also known as: Kazuki Yamada
Winning the Besançon International Conducting Competition in 2009 put Kazuki Yamada on the map fast, and he has barely slowed down since. The Japanese conductor, originally from Kanagawa, has built an impressive portfolio of principal posts across Europe and Japan, including long tenures with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Since April 2023 he has served as music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, a role recently extended through the 2028 to 2029 season. On disc, Yamada has recorded a solid run of albums with the OSR for the Pentatone label, covering French repertoire, Russian dance music and works by Ravel and Gershwin alongside pianist Denis Kozhukhin. His next big move comes in 2026 when he takes the helm of the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin as chief conductor, adding yet another major ensemble to an already busy roster.
