About
Also known as: Keith Jarett, Keith Jarret, Keith Jarrett Quartet
The Köln Concert, recorded in 1975, remains the best selling solo piano recording in history, and it is the kind of achievement that defines a career. Keith Jarrett built that career across decades of restless musical movement, starting out with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, passing through Charles Lloyd's groundbreaking quartet in the late 1960s where the band played The Fillmore and won over rock crowds, and then spending time alongside Miles Davis on electric piano and organ despite a deep personal distaste for amplified instruments. He stuck with Davis out of respect, which says a lot about both men. By the early 1970s Jarrett had carved out his own lane with marathon solo improvisations that could stretch to forty minutes, blending jazz, gospel, blues, and classical influences into something genuinely hard to categorize. His Standards Trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette became one of the longest running small ensembles in jazz. Sadly, two strokes in 2018 left him partially paralyzed, ending his performing life.
