One of the architects of new jack swing, Keith Sweat helped reshape R&B in the late 1980s by teaming up with producer Teddy Riley, who actually talked him into singing through his nose as a way to stand out. That first album, Make It Last Forever, sold three million copies and spawned "I Want Her," which topped the R&B charts and landed a Soul Train nomination. His run of hits kept coming through the 1990s, with "Twisted" and "Nobody" both cracking the top three on the Billboard Hot 100. Sweat has always been as much a tastemaker as a performer. He discovered and helped develop Silk, whose single "Freak Me" hit number one on the Hot 100, and also brought Atlanta group Kut Klose to wider attention. He then formed the supergroup LSG alongside Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill, scoring a double platinum debut album. Across 13 solo albums he has stayed a reliable presence in smooth soul and quiet storm radio, with new music still surfacing as recently as 2024.
