About
KEN mode, whose name stands for Kill Everyone Now, have been churning out confrontational noise rock from Winnipeg since 1999. Built around brothers Jesse and Shane Matthewson on guitar/vocals and drums respectively, the band has sharpened its sound across nine albums, from the raw early chaos of Mongrel to the saxophone laced textures of recent records. Their 2011 album Venerable won the inaugural Heavy Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year Juno Award in Canada, and 2013's Entrench landed on the Polaris Music Prize longlist. They have not slowed down since, with 2022's Null followed quickly by Void in 2023, the latter also earning a Polaris longlist nod. The current lineup includes saxophonist and multi instrumentalist Kathryn Kerr, who joined in 2021 and has pushed the band's sound into grittier, more atmospheric territory.
