Few alto saxophonists have moved through jazz history the way Kenny Garrett has. Growing up in Detroit, he landed a spot in the Duke Ellington Orchestra under Mercer Ellington as a teenager, then went on to play with Miles Davis, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Freddie Hubbard, and Woody Shaw before stepping out as a leader in his own right. His sound sits firmly in post bop territory, though he has never been afraid to pull in outside influences, most notably on Beyond the Wall from 2006, a Grammy nominated record that weaves in Asian musical sensibilities. His run of albums on Warner Bros. through the 1990s and early 2000s built him a serious reputation, and critics at the Washington City Paper went as far as calling him the most important alto saxophonist of his generation. Seeds from the Underground and Pushing the World Away kept that momentum going in the 2010s. More recently he released Sounds from the Ancestors in 2021 and then took a sharp left turn with Who Killed AI? in 2024, a full electronic album made with producer and instrumentalist Svoy.
