When Kerem Hasan stepped in to cover Bernard Haitink conducting Mahler's Ninth Symphony with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, he was just 26 years old. That kind of high pressure debut tends to define a career, and it did. The British Cypriot conductor had already won the Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award in 2017 and served as Associate Conductor of the Welsh National Opera before landing the Chief Conductor role at the Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck, a post he held for four seasons. His operatic range is genuinely broad: Verdi, Bizet, Stravinsky, Mozart, and more recently a 2025 premiere of Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking at the English National Opera, the first full professional staging of the work in the UK. He has worked with orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Dresden Philharmonic. Since 2025 he serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Noord Nederlands Orkest.
