About

Kettcar built their reputation on a very deliberate turn away from the aggressive punk and ska traditions that shaped their members' earlier work. Formed in Hamburg in 2001 around Marcus Wiebusch and bassist Reimer Bustorff, both veterans of Rantanplan, the band leaned into emotional, personal lyrics over guitar pop arrangements that grew richer with each record. Unable to find a label for their debut, they co founded Grand Hotel van Cleef with Tomte's Thees Uhlmann, and the label became a cornerstone of the Hamburg indie scene. Their second album, Von Spatzen und Tauben, Dächern und Händen, cracked the German top five and is often cited as their real breakthrough. Later records added strings, winds and piano to the mix, and the band even toured with the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt for a run of orchestral concerts. After a hiatus of several years they returned in 2017 with the single Sommer '89, a song about escaping the GDR that doubled as a comment on the European migrant crisis, followed by their fifth album Ich vs. Wir.
