About
K1 De Ultimate, born Wasiu Omogbolahan Ayinde Marshal, is the undisputed king of Fuji music, a Nigerian genre rooted in Yoruba percussion and call and response vocals. He built his reputation by developing "Talazo Fuji", a style he shaped under the mentorship of the genre's founding figure, Ayinde Barrister, whose band he joined in the mid 1970s. His 1984 album Talazo '84 became his most celebrated work, and he has kept a relentless pace ever since, racking up dozens of studio and live albums over four decades. His reach has long extended beyond Nigeria. He launched international tours across North America and Europe from 1986 onwards, and in 1995 he brought Fuji to the WOMAD Festival for the very first time. Titles and honours have piled up too, from being crowned King of Fuji at NTA Ibadan in 1993 to being installed as the first Mayegun of Yorubaland in 2020. His 2023 album Timeless is among his most recent releases.
