About
Kingfisher Sky grew out of drummer Ivar de Graaf's departure from Within Temptation, and what he built from that point is pretty far removed from where he started. The Dutch band blends progressive, symphonic and gothic metal with classical cello, two distinctly different female vocal styles, and a roster of influences ranging from Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd to Aretha Franklin and Kate Bush. That wide spread of reference points is not just name dropping: you can actually hear it in the way Judith Rijnveld's classically trained voice sits against the heavy, groove driven arrangements. The band released their debut Hallway of Dreams in 2007 to strong reviews, picked up distribution across the US, Japan and much of Europe, and later added cellist Maaike Peterse as a full band member after a one off live collaboration worked out better than expected. Three more albums followed over the years, with Feeding the Wolves arriving in 2024, showing the band still very much at work.
