Few bands wore the glam metal tag as comfortably as Kix, the Maryland hard rock outfit that spent the 1980s building from bar covers to arena headliner status. Their 1988 album Blow My Fuse is the high watermark, going platinum and sending the power ballad "Don't Close Your Eyes" to No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Before that, 1985's Midnite Dynamite had already cracked the mainstream, charting two singles on the Hot Mainstream Rock chart with the title track and "Cold Shower." The classic lineup of Steve Whiteman on vocals, guitarists Ronnie Younkins and Brian Forsythe, bassist and primary songwriter Donnie Purnell, and drummer Jimmy Chalfant gave Kix their tongue in cheek, hard rocking identity from the start. After the band's commercial window closed in the mid 1990s, members scattered into side projects before a reunion in 2003 that kept Kix on the road for another two decades. They finally called it a day in 2023.
