About
Klangforum Wien has spent four decades making contemporary classical music its whole identity, and that focus has earned the Vienna based chamber orchestra a reputation as Austria's foremost ensemble in the field. Beat Furrer founded the group in 1985, and one of its most distinctive choices has been to operate without a principal conductor, running instead on collective principles. That approach suits the music they champion: composers like Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm, and Hans Zender, whose work demands genuine collaboration between players. They are regulars at serious new music festivals, from the Donaueschingen Musiktage to the Wiener Festwochen, and they hold a professorship in contemporary performance practice at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. Their recordings come out on the KAIROS label, and they have also crossed into interdisciplinary territory through the Infinite Screen project with artists Arotin And Serghei, appearing at the Wiener Konzerthaus, La Biennale di Venezia, and the Centre Pompidou.
