One of the sharpest lyricists French hip hop has ever produced, Kohndo built his reputation in the 1990s as a core member of La Cliqua, the Paris collective whose 1995 EP "Conçu pour durer" is still considered a cornerstone of French rap. Performing then as Doc Odnok, his eccentric rhyme style stood out immediately, and the group went on to share stages with Arrested Development at the Olympia and perform at the Zulu Nation Anniversary in New York City. Going solo, Kohndo leaned into a more reflective, poetic take on boom bap, describing his music as urban poetry with touches of soul and jazz. His 2006 album "Deux Pieds sur Terre / Stick to Ground", partly mixed in Detroit, brought in Slum Village, Dwele and Jaheim for one of the more genuinely international French rap records of its era. He later formed a live band, the Velvet Club, to bring that sound to festival stages across France. More recently he has been putting out tracks alongside artists like Nekfeu and A2h.
