About
Kolja Lessing has spent much of his career shining a light on music that history nearly buried. The German violinist and pianist has made it his mission to revive works by composers who were persecuted under the Nazi regime, including Franz Schreker and his circle. He has given world premieres of pieces by composers like Berthold Goldschmidt, Jacqueline Fontyn, and Zoltán Székely, and his four volume CD series dedicated to Schreker's masterclass students in Vienna and Berlin stands as a serious archival achievement. Beyond that specialist focus, Lessing's recordings range from Johann Paul von Westhoff's complete suites for solo violin to Max Reger's complete works for violin and orchestra. He has held a professorship at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart since 2000, and his commitment to forgotten repertoire has earned him the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, among other honours.
