The Koninklijke Militaire Kapel Johan Willem Friso, a Dutch brass and orchestral ensemble, has built a reputation for ambitious programming that goes well beyond standard ceremonial fare. The ensemble has premiered newly commissioned works, including Mata Hari, a composition by Johan de Meij written specifically for the group, featuring a solo alto oboe part. Composers have also arranged and instrumented music directly for the kapel, as Bob Zimmerman did with his score for the award winning Dutch nature film De Nieuwe Wildernis. The ensemble draws on soloists from within its own ranks, with individual players stepping forward for featured parts at concerts. Its repertoire ranges from large scale orchestral storytelling to festive programmes, and the kapel regularly collaborates with the municipality of Assen on its annual concert series.
