About
Makiko Ito is a Japanese theatre maker whose work centres on very young audiences, typically babies and toddlers. Her performances blend dance, movement and live instrumentation, and she builds them around improvisation, interaction and the natural curiosity children bring into a room. Koro Koro, a Japanese word meaning something rolling, follows that same philosophy: kids are invited to jump like frogs, crawl like caterpillars, and even reach out and touch the drums, the gong or the performers themselves. Nothing is too strange, everything is welcome. Koro Koro sits alongside her earlier productions BB and Umi as part of a body of work where the babies and toddlers in the audience genuinely steer what happens on stage. Ito collaborates with the Wonderland Collectief on this show, and her signature strength is the direct, warm communication she builds with the very youngest theatregoers.
