About
Korpiklaani, which translates from Finnish as "The Backwoods Clan", has been making folk metal out of Lahti, Finland since 2003, though the band's roots go considerably deeper. Frontman Jonne Järvelä traces a line back through Sámi folk outfit Shamaani Duo in the early 1990s and then through Shaman, a group built on yoiking, shamanic drums, and Northern Sámi lyrics. The pivot to metal came partly from Järvelä's work with Finntroll, and the shift reshaped everything: growling gave way to folk and thrash vocals, and the lyrical territory moved toward alcohol, partying, and Finnish mythology. Korpiklaani describe their own sound as "old people's music with heavy metal guitars", which is a pretty honest sell. Their earlier albums leaned on English lyrics but they have sung mostly in Finnish ever since, with poet Tuomas Keskimäki shaping words in the ancient kalevalametre style. The band has put out a string of studio albums, with Jylhä arriving in 2021 and Rankarumpu following in 2024, showing no sign of slowing down.
