About
Also known as: Kung Woo Pek, 백건우
Few pianists have the range of Kun Woo Paik, the Seoul born virtuoso who moves with equal authority through Scriabin's fever dream sonatas, Ravel's crystalline solo works, and the full sweep of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which he recorded for Decca between 2005 and 2007. He has played the Last Night of the Proms with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, worked alongside conductors like Mariss Jansons and Mikhail Pletnev, and performed at Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonie. His catalogue is genuinely distinctive: complete Prokofiev concertos, complete Rachmaninoff concertos, Fauré piano works, and a Bach via Busoni disc that shows his love of transcription and rare repertoire. He spent 21 years as Artistic Director of the Emerald Coast Music Festival in Dinard, France, championing free outdoor concerts and programmes for children alongside the headline recitals. Since signing with Decca Classics in 2000, he has also recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, including discs of Chopin nocturnes and Schumann.
