About
Kurt Vile built his reputation through lo fi home recordings and a stint as lead guitarist in The War on Drugs before focusing full time on his solo project, Kurt Vile and the Violators. Backed by a rotating cast that has included Jesse Trbovich, Kyle Spence, and Adam Langellotti, Vile signed to Matador Records in 2009 and has steadily expanded his sound from raw bedroom recordings to fuller studio productions. His 2011 album Smoke Ring for My Halo was the real breakthrough, and the 2015 single "Pretty Pimpin" topped the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart, his biggest commercial moment to date. His catalog keeps growing in interesting directions. The 2017 collab album Lotta Sea Lice with Courtney Barnett showed off his easy chemistry with other artists, while the 2022 record (watch my moves) was largely tracked at home during COVID lockdowns. The sprawling 52 minute EP Back to Moon Beach followed in 2023, and his tenth album Philadelphia's Been Good to Me arrived in 2026.
