About
La La Brooks is the voice behind two of the most iconic girl group recordings of the 1960s. As the lead vocalist of The Crystals, she sang on both "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Then He Kissed Me", the Phil Spector produced tracks that hit the top ten on both sides of the Atlantic. She joined the group in 1962, stepping in when original member Myrna Girard departed, and quickly became the defining voice of the act. Beyond the Crystals, Brooks built a genuinely varied career. She appeared in the original Broadway production of Hair and later in Two Gentlemen of Verona, recorded with the Neville Brothers, Bobby Womack and Isaac Hayes, and contributed to the Cotton Comes to Harlem soundtrack. She also released her own solo records, including All or Nothing in 2014. After years of living in London and Vienna with jazz musician Idris Muhammad, she eventually made her way back to New York, and has been performing with her musical group around the world.
