La Petite Bande grew out of a one off recording session in 1972, when Sigiswald Kuijken brought together a group of period instrument players to record Lully's Le Bourgeois gentilhomme under Gustav Leonhardt. The name came straight from Lully's own royal ensemble at the court of Louis XIV, and the group liked each other enough to stick around. Based in Leuven, Belgium, the ensemble became one of the leading period performance groups in Europe, working through French Baroque repertoire before expanding into Italian and German composers like Corelli, Handel and Bach, and eventually into Haydn and Mozart. Their 1982 recording of Haydn's The Creation was the first ever made on period instruments, and their UK debut that same year at the BBC Proms drew praise for playing that was, in one critic's words, "some of the best disciplined Baroque playing to be heard today." From 2006 onward they threw themselves into Bach's cantatas, aiming to record a complete liturgical year, with each vocal part taken by a single singer.
