About
Ladybirds trio plays without any chords or harmony instrument to fall back on, just saxophone, trumpet and double bass, yet that stripped down setup turns out to be plenty of space to tell a story. The group formed in 2024 when tenor saxophonist Fokelien Looijenga and trumpeter Maaike Boonstra decided to put the expressive power of brass front and centre, and bassist Arnout Baard soon joined to complete the trio. Their self written music sits somewhere in Nordic jazz territory but regularly wanders off into bebop, world music and the occasional dash of funk. Dreamy and playful, with plenty of room for improvisation, each piece works like a small narrative. Their album Nachtwacht collects personal experiences and anecdotes from the three musicians, all quite different from one another but tied together by a shared feeling: things have a way of working out.
