Few drummers can say they learned most of a band's setlist on a plane ride, but that's exactly what Larnell Lewis did before recording Snarky Puppy's 2014 live album We Like It Here in the Netherlands. The Toronto native has been a cornerstone of that jazz fusion outfit ever since, contributing to their Grammy winning 2016 record Culcha Vulcha and several other releases. His musical range is genuinely wide, built on years of playing gospel, soca, reggae, funk and more, and he's equally at home as a session player, having worked with artists from Michael Brecker to Chaka Khan. Lewis stepped out on his own with the 2018 solo album In the Moment, playing virtually every instrument himself, and has followed it up with Relive the Moment and Slice of Life. A 2021 Drumeo video, where he listened to Metallica's Enter Sandman once and then played the whole drum part from memory, went massively viral, racking up over 19 million views. It's the kind of moment that sums him up: technically jaw dropping, but completely unpretentious about it.
