Few producers can claim to have invented a genre, but Larry Heard has a solid case. Working out of Chicago in the mid 1980s, he recorded three tracks within days of buying a Roland synthesizer and a TR 909 drum machine that would go on to define deep house: "Can You Feel It", "Mystery of Love", and "Washing Machine". That combination of futuristic machine rhythms and lush, emotionally direct melodies set a template that still echoes through electronic music today. Recording mostly as Mr. Fingers, Heard also co founded Fingers Inc. with singer Robert Owens and Ron Wilson, and their 1988 album Another Side stands as the first full length house LP. His early Trax Records material was compiled on Ammnesia without his consent, and he finally put out an authorized version on his own Alleviated label in 2022. After years of releasing music under a string of aliases including Loosefingers and House Factors, he returned with the Mr. Fingers album Cerebral Hemispheres in 2018, followed by two more volumes under that name in 2022 and 2023.
