About
Laura Dooge is a Dutch jazz vocalist whose debut album Songs for the best of times, the worst of times draws on The Great American Songbook to reflect on the turbulent present. The nine tracks, all from the first half of the twentieth century, are divided between the cynical and the hopeful: songs like "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", "I Hate Men" and "Why Can't You Behave" carry a wry, critical edge, while "Street of Dreams" and "Pick Yourself Up" lean into something more tender and optimistic. What makes it land is Dooge's feel for lyrics as storytelling, pulling century old material into the now without forcing it. Before stepping out as a frontwoman, she built experience as a sideman on albums with The Fried Seven and Vondelier. Her band, drawn from Amsterdam's jazz scene, contributes arrangements that are tasteful and inventive without overwriting the original compositions.
