About

Laurence Cummings is the kind of musician who has quietly shaped how Britain engages with baroque and early music over the past few decades. A harpsichordist, organist, and conductor from Birmingham, he has played continuo with some of the most respected period instrument ensembles around, including Les Arts Florissants, the Gabrieli Consort, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He has also conducted at English National Opera and Glyndebourne, showing his range extends well beyond the harpsichord bench. Handel has been a particular focus throughout his career. He has led the London Handel Festival since 1999 and served as artistic director of the Göttingen International Handel Festival. One of his most notable recordings is the first ever recording of a newly discovered Handel Gloria, made with soprano Emma Kirkby. He now serves as music director of the Academy of Ancient Music, a role he took on from the 2021 to 2022 season, and he also leads the Orquestra Barroca Casa da Musica in Porto. In 2024 he was appointed OBE for services to music.
