About

Lauryn Hill's solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, arrived in 1998 and rewrote the record books almost immediately. It hit number one on the Billboard 200 with the highest first week sales for a female artist at the time, and its lead single "Doo Wop (That Thing)" debuted at number one on the Hot 100, a double chart feat no artist had pulled off before. At the Grammys that year, she became the first rapper to win Album of the Year and the first woman to win five awards in a single night. The album has since topped Apple Music's 100 Best Albums list and remains one of the best selling records ever made. Before going solo, Hill was the frontwoman of the Fugees, whose second album The Score sold over 22 million copies worldwide on the strength of hits like "Killing Me Softly" and "Ready or Not". She was also a remarkably prolific collaborator in that era, writing Aretha Franklin's "A Rose Is Still a Rose" and producing for Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, and Santana. Her live album MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 introduced rawer, more confessional songwriting, and tracks from it ended up influencing other artists, most notably Kanye West, who interpolated "Mystery of Iniquity" on "All Falls Down".
