About
Le Caravansérail is a French baroque orchestra that brings early music to life with a chamber sensibility. One of their signature projects centres on François Couperin's Leçons de Ténèbres, a collection of works rooted in the ancient tradition of liturgical lament music that became fashionable at the court of Louis XIV. These pieces, written for one or two soloists over a basso continuo, are defined by their long, melismatic vocal lines drawn from Gregorian chant. Le Caravansérail frames those vocal works with a suite for viola da gamba and intimate harpsichord music, giving the whole programme a cohesive, quietly devotional atmosphere. When sopranos Maïlys de Villoutreys and Rachel Redmond take on the solo parts, the ornate melodic writing really gets room to breathe.
