Founded in 2000, Le Concert d'Astrée has established itself as one of the leading ensembles in French baroque performance practice, a reputation the Dutch press has noted since the group's early years. The ensemble was built by conductor Emmanuelle Haïm, who gathered France's finest baroque musicians around her with a shared commitment to expressivity and historical authenticity. Together they perform the baroque repertoire with a precision and emotional directness that sets them apart. One of the group's signature programmes centres on Handel's Messiah, the 1741 oratorio that traces the life of Christ from birth to crucifixion and became a Christmas institution in England. Le Concert d'Astrée makes a strong case for Handel as festive repertoire, bringing out the drama in celebrated passages alongside the sweeping choral writing that has kept the work alive for centuries.
