About
Also known as: Ledisi Anibade Young
Ledisi picked up her first Grammy in 2021 for "Anything for You", but she'd been building her name for two decades before that. Her name means "to bring forth" in Yoruba, and she started out fronting a funk band called Anibade around the San Francisco Bay Area. When the major labels passed, she and keyboardist Sundra Manning launched their own label, LeSun Music, and put out her debut Soulsinger in 2000. Her second album, Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue, mixed in jazz standards like "'Round Midnight" and won Outstanding Jazz Album at the California Music Awards. The big break came with Lost & Found in 2007, her Verve debut, which landed Grammy nominations for Best R&B Album and Best New Artist. Hits like "In the Morning" followed, along with a Christmas record and several more albums. In 2020 she went independent again with her own label, Listen Back Entertainment. She's also an actress, playing Mahalia Jackson in Selma and Gladys Knight in Spinning Gold.
