About
Leela James had a No. 1 on Billboard's Adult R&B Songs chart in 2017 with "Don't Want You Back", then topped it again in 2021 with "Complicated", whose video has passed 30 million views on YouTube. The Los Angeles soul singer first turned up on the soundtrack to the film Bait, and went on to guest with Pete Rock, Moby, Robert Randolph and even Ray Charles, duetting on "Compared to What" on his posthumous album Genius & Friends. Her 2005 debut, A Change Is Gonna Come, brought in Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West and Wyclef Jean. Later records include an all cover tribute to the Staple Singers, a Stax release called My Soul, and Loving You More... In the Spirit of Etta James, which grew into a full tribute after Etta's death. She names James Brown, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye and Mavis Staples among her influences, and she's also done reality TV on R&B Divas: Los Angeles. Her most recent albums are See Me and Thought U Knew.
