About
Leila Josefowicz has built her career around a conviction that contemporary music deserves the same reverence as the standard repertoire, and major composers have responded by writing concertos specifically for her. Esa Pekka Salonen, John Adams, Colin Matthews, Steven Mackey, and Luca Francesconi have all created works with her in mind, and those premieres have taken her from the New York Philharmonic to the Berlin Philharmonic and most of the world's top orchestras in between. She gave the world premiere of Adams's Scheherazade.2 with the New York Philharmonic in 2015, and Francesconi's Duende won the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award after she unveiled it in 2014. Josefowicz made her Carnegie Hall debut at just sixteen, performing the Tchaikovsky Concerto with Sir Neville Marriner, and she went on to record for Philips Classics, Warner Classics, Nonesuch, and Deutsche Grammophon. Her commitment to new music earned her a MacArthur Fellowship in 2008, and she picked up the Avery Fisher Prize in 2018, two of the most significant recognitions an American classical musician can receive.
