Argentine pianist Leo Genovese has built a reputation as one of the more adventurous voices in contemporary jazz, the kind of player who refuses to stay in one stylistic lane. Born in Venado Tuerto and trained at Berklee, he spent years on the road and in the studio with bassist Esperanza Spalding before carving out his own path as a leader. His 2013 album Seeds drew serious attention, with critics noting how he weaves electronic and acoustic sounds together, leans into chromatic scaling, and sets seemingly incompatible ideas side by side without ever losing the thread. His work alongside Wayne Shorter on Live at the Detroit Jazz Festival earned them a Grammy for Best Improvised Jazz Solo on Shorter's composition Endangered Species, a pretty remarkable feather in the cap for any pianist. The DownBeat Critics Award for Rising Star on Piano followed in 2023, confirming what a lot of jazz listeners had already figured out: Genovese is genuinely one to watch.
