About

Also known as: Kottke, Leo

Leo Kottke plays acoustic guitar in a way most people simply can't imagine: a dense, syncopated fingerpicking style that weaves together blues, jazz, and folk into polyphonic melodies that sound almost orchestral coming from one person. His 1969 record on Takoma, known as the Armadillo album, is the one that put him on the map and has never really gone away, getting reissued on label after label ever since. When he performs live, he mixes instrumental pieces on six and 12 string guitars with the kind of rambling, deadpan monologues that have become as much a part of his show as the music itself. In the early 1980s, tendinitis nearly ended his career, forcing him to completely overhaul his technique and switch to a classical approach with his fingertips. He came back stronger, eventually teaming up with Phish bassist Mike Gordon for a pair of collaborative albums in the 2000s. The two reunited for Noon in 2020, released on Megaplum/ATO Records, marking Kottke's first studio album in about 15 years.
