About
Also known as: Leona Philippo
Winning The Voice of Holland in 2012 with over 54% of the public vote put Leona Philippo firmly on the map, but her career had been running long before that. The Canadian born, Dutch raised singer of Jamaican origin spent years building serious stage credentials: starring in the Joop van den Ende production of Aida, touring Europe and Japan with the Nits, and doing backing vocals for the likes of Candy Dulfer and Trijntje Oosterhuis. She even popped up as a guest during a Lionel Richie Symphonica in Rosso concert in 2008. Her Voice win came with a Bob Marley cover of "Could You Be Loved" that hit number one on the Dutch Single Top 100. She is also a working actress, with credits in Dutch films and TV series stretching back to the early 2000s, and has kept busy on stage across a wide range of theatrical and musical productions. In 2016 she won the conducting competition Maestro on AVROTROS, wrapping up the final with John Williams film music and Beethoven's Fifth.
