About
Also known as: LesYeux Noirs
Les Yeux Noirs blur the lines between jazz manouche, klezmer, Romani music, and Yiddish tradition in ways that feel both ancient and sharply alive. The French band was founded by brothers Eric and Olivier Slabiak, both violinists, and their lineup has always leaned into texture: double bass, accordion, cello, cymbalom, and guitar all sharing space with modern sampling and Arabic drums. Their name comes from a 19th century tune that Django Reinhardt helped make famous, often mislabeled as a Russian Gypsy song. Across their discography, which stretches from their 1992 debut A band of Gypsies through to tChorba and tiganeasca, they move freely between a Yiddish lullaby and full throttle fusion without it ever feeling forced. The mix of traditional melody and contemporary production is where they really find their groove, making music that works just as well on a dance floor as it does late at night with headphones on.
