Leyla McCalla plays cello, banjo, and guitar, and her music pulls from a distinctive mix of Haitian Creole folk traditions, Louisiana sounds like old Cajun fiddle and trad jazz banjo, and the kind of storytelling folk that feels deeply literary. Her debut album, Vari Colored Songs, was a tribute to Langston Hughes built from adaptations of his poems, Haitian folk songs, and original compositions. She funded it partly through a Kickstarter campaign that blew past its five thousand dollar goal to raise twenty thousand. Before going solo, she was a cellist with the Grammy winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops from 2011 to 2013, and later joined the supergroup Our Native Daughters. Based in New Orleans, she has put out a string of solo records, with her most recent being Sun Without the Heat, released in 2024 on Anti.
