Liane Carroll is the kind of jazz artist who makes critics reach for superlatives. A vocalist and pianist in one, she has a slightly husky singing voice and what John Fordham of The Guardian calls an "Ella Fitzgerald like improv athleticism" on top of serious emotional depth on ballads. She has won Best Vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards, taken Jazz Musician of the Year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards, and picked up a Gold award from BASCA, yet Nick Hasted of The Independent once noted she remains "frustratingly little known". Her career spans an impressive range of collaborators, from Paul McCartney and Gerry Rafferty to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and she has also served as lead vocalist and Wurlitzer player for drum and bass outfit London Elektricity. A regular at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and the 606 Club in London, she has released a string of albums since 2009 that each earned four star reviews in The Guardian or The Observer. She also teaches at jazz summer schools across the UK and Europe.
