Lil Uzi Vert has spent the better part of a decade bending hip hop into something almost unrecognisable, pulling in emo, punk, trap and cloud rap until the seams show and that is very much the point. The Philadelphia rapper first turned heads with the 2015 mixtape Luv Is Rage, landed a record deal through DJ Drama's Generation Now imprint, and then hit the mainstream hard with "Money Longer" in 2016. A guest spot on Migos' chart topping "Bad and Boujee" helped cement their profile before "XO Tour Llif3" arrived in 2017 and rewrote what a rap song could sound like, picking up the MTV VMA for Song of Summer along the way. Their debut album Luv Is Rage 2 shot straight to number one on the Billboard 200 and went double platinum, and despite a long wait, Eternal Atake pulled off the same trick in 2020. The collaborative album Pluto x Baby Pluto with Future followed that same year. Pink Tape in 2023 made it three consecutive solo number ones on the Billboard 200, riding in part on the top ten single "Just Wanna Rock". Their fashion sense, face tattoos and genre restlessness have made them one of the more genuinely distinct figures in contemporary rap.
