Linda May Han Oh plays upright bass with a depth and compositional seriousness that has made her one of the most in demand figures in contemporary jazz. Her records as a leader, from the early Entry through to Walk Against Wind and Aventurine, show a musician who builds her own sonic world rather than following genre conventions. Aventurine won the Art Music Award for Jazz Work of the Year, and her 2023 Grammy win for New Standards Vol. 1 alongside Terri Lyne Carrington, Kris Davis, Nicholas Payton and Matthew Stevens confirmed what the jazz world already knew. She has also been named Bassist of the Year by the JJA Jazz Awards multiple times. Her session credits read like a who's who of modern jazz, with appearances on records by Pat Metheny, Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey, Dave Douglas and Joe Lovano, among many others. Her duo work with pianist Fabian Almazan runs through much of her career too, both as a creative partner and bandmate. Currently an Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music and a member of the Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice, she brings the same rigour to teaching that she does to her playing.
