About
Kansas City alto saxophonist Logan Richardson has spent two decades pushing at jazz's edges, leading his long running group SHIFT with a simple but loaded question in mind: can there be genuinely new music in jazz? His 2015 Blue Note debut of the same name brought that question to a wider audience, with Pat Metheny, Jason Moran, Harish Raghavan, and Nasheet Waits along for the ride. It was a serious statement from a player who had already put in years on the New York scene, appearing on records by Billy Hart, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Gerald Clayton among others. Richardson has kept releasing music at a steady clip through his own WAX Industry label, with Holy Water in 2023 and Sacred Garden in 2024 adding to a catalogue that also includes Afrofuturism and blues PEOPLE. As a sideman he's shown up on sessions by Christian Scott and Nduduzo Makhathini, and his membership in NEXT Collective points to a musician who's always interested in collaboration. The through line across all of it is a restless curiosity about what the saxophone and jazz as a whole can still become.
