About

The London Sinfonietta opened its very first concert in 1968 with the world premiere of John Tavener's The Whale, and a couple of years later that piece ended up on the Beatles' Apple Records label. Not a bad start for a contemporary chamber orchestra. Since then the group has commissioned over 300 works and premiered hundreds more, backing names like Harrison Birtwistle, Iannis Xenakis, Luciano Berio, Thomas Adès, George Benjamin and Steve Reich along the way. They also like to cross borders. In the early 2000s they teamed up with pop and electronica artists, later working with Mica Levi and Matthew Herbert, and their Warp Works & Twentieth Century Masters project put Aphex Twin next to John Cage. Their 1991 recording of Górecki's Third Symphony sold over 700,000 copies in its first two years. Based in London, they are a resident ensemble at the Southbank Centre, built around 18 Principal Players, and Reich's Clapping Music and Electric Counterpoint feature among their online videos.
